Transport phenomena of human exhaled droplets due to respiratory action in ventilated indoor environments.

چکیده

1. The transport dynamics of expiratory droplets was modelled and verified against experimental data. 2. Droplet size distributions in air were measured. Small droplets (initial size ≤45 μm) were largely airborne. Large droplets (initial size ≥87.5 μm) settled quickly. 3. The transport characteristics of expiratory droplets were highly influenced by ventilation airflow patterns. The location of the exhaust vent can play a significant role in controlling the dispersion pattern of expiratory droplets. 4. Deviations from the perfectly mixed condition were found. Further development of risk assessment models taking imperfect mixing conditions into account are needed.

Transport of expiratory droplets in an aircraft cabin.

UNLABELLED The droplets exhaled by an index patient with infectious disease such as influenza or tuberculosis may be the carriers of contagious agents. Indoor environments such as the airliner cabins may be susceptible to infection from such airborne contagious agents. The present investigation computed the transport of the droplets exhaled by the index patient seated in the middle of a seven-r...

Spatial dynamics of airborne infectious diseases.

Disease outbreaks, such as those of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome in 2003 and the 2009 pandemic A(H1N1) influenza, have highlighted the potential for airborne transmission in indoor environments. Respirable pathogen-carrying droplets provide a vector for the spatial spread of infection with droplet transport determined by diffusive and convective processes. An epidemiological model describi...

Particle size distribution and human respiratory deposition of trace metals in indoor work environments.

Respiratory response to inhalation of fine particles has been investigated for the aerosol generated by welding. Particles were sampled using a pair of 5-stage cascade impactors operating at 1 l./min flow rate. The subject exhaled into one impactor through an air ballast arrangement, and the other impactor simultaneously sampled the surrounding air. Particle size fractions were analyzed for pri...

Artificial Neural Network Modeling for the Management of Oil Slick Transport in the Marine Environments

Due to an increase in demand of petroleum products which are transported by vessels or exported by pipelines, oil spill management becomes a controversial issue in coastal environment safety as well as making serious financial problems. After spilling oil in the water body, oil spreads as a thin layer on the water surface. Currents, waves and wind are the main causes of oil slick transport. The...

Safety and feasibility of exhaled breath condensate collection in ventilated infants and children.

The aim of this study was to develop a technique for the collection of exhaled breath condensate (EBC) from ventilated children and assess its safety and feasibility. Collection of EBC is used to investigate markers of oxidative stress in the lower airway. No studies have assessed its safety in ventilated children. An in vitro model was developed by connecting a ventilator to an artificial lung...
